Our client is a rapidly growing technology-led business focused on energy trading and the algorithmic optimisation of renewable generation and energy storage assets across global markets. Their core objective is to maximise asset performance and returns, supporting the broader transition to a low-carbon energy system.
With an expanding international footprint and a multidisciplinary team spanning trading, data science, software engineering, and energy markets, they are continuing to scale their commercial capabilities.
An opportunity has arisen for an Energy Spot Trader to join the Australian team, with a focus on the National Electricity Market (NEM). This role will play a key part in trading, optimisation, and commercial decision-making across a portfolio of assets.
Key Responsibilities
Asset Integration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Evaluate operational risks and opportunities associated with new and existing assets in collaboration with internal teams
- Support engagement with clients, market bodies, and key external stakeholders
- Contribute to the development and refinement of trading frameworks and operational processes
- Provide input into new product and service development, identifying market opportunities and supporting implementation
- Manage and optimise physical and financial trading positions within real-time electricity markets
- Work collaboratively to develop and execute trading strategies within defined risk parameters
- Support continuous improvement of internal platforms and tools to enhance trading performance
- Oversee real-time dispatch and optimisation of asset portfolios to maximise value
- Monitor and analyse trading performance across asset portfolios
- Benchmark results against comparable assets in the market
- Conduct market analysis to understand key price drivers and system dynamics
- Support management of market, regulatory, and commercial risks
- Contribute to structured trading strategies and broader commercial initiatives
- Assist in refining algorithmic trading strategies and optimisation approaches
- Contribute to market forecasting and analytical inputs used in decision-making
Core Requirements:
- Degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering, economics, finance, or computer science
- 2+ years' experience in electricity market trading (physical or financial) within the NEM
- Strong understanding of market dynamics, dispatch processes, and regulatory frameworks
- Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments
- Strong analytical capability with sound commercial judgement
- Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement ability
- Proactive mindset with the ability to adapt and prioritise competing demands
- Experience with renewable energy or battery storage asset operations or optimisation
- Exposure to Python or similar analytical tools
- Experience working with databases and visualisation tools
- Familiarity with optimisation techniques (e.g. linear programming)
