Build a Better Future with MTL. MTL is a growing engineering consultancy specialising in mechanical design and project engineering across NZ’s water infrastructure. We design and deliver pump stations, pipelines, WWTPs, and rotating plant systems—real-world solutions that keep communities thriving.
We’ve recently secured the mechanical design work for the new-build and upgraded Te Puke Wastewater Treatment Plant, a major replacement of the existing facility—protecting New Zealand’s future infrastructure.
We’re seeking an Intermediate Mechanical/Water Engineer (4–8 years' experience) with a strong mechanical foundation and a passion for developing deeper expertise in water infrastructure. At MTL, you’ll be supported by a Senior Engineer plus mentorship from seniors throughout your professional journey.
What You’ll Do
- Design and deliver mechanical systems for pump stations, pipelines, WWTPs, and rotating plant.
- Conduct technical modelling, calculations, and design packages as part of multi-disciplinary projects.
- Lead smaller projects and assist on larger ones—from concept through design, coordination, and documentation.
- Provide on-site engineering support: construction monitoring, QA, and commissioning.
- Engage closely with clients, contractors, and suppliers as part of your project engineering role.
- Work alongside a Senior Engineer and senior mentors; and pay it forward by mentoring graduates.
- Be part of a transformational project: the new-build upgrade of the Te Puke WWTP—replacing and enhancing the existing plant (westernbay.govt.nz, Your Place Western Bay of Plenty).
- Supported career growth with clear pathways, including CPEng guidance.
- Competitive remuneration and a flexible, people-first workplace culture.
- Modern Kingsland office, close to cafés, transport, and social hotspots.
- A collaborative team environment with regular socials, sports nights, and shared Friday wind-downs.
- 4–8 years of mechanical engineering experience—preferably with rotating plant, pumps, piping, or pressure equipment design.
- Exposure to water, wastewater, industrial, or renewable energy engineering projects.
- Ambitious but pragmatic—eager to grow in both design and project engineering.
- A ME degree from a Washington Accord-recognised institution; CPEng status or on the pathway.
- Excellent communicator with the confidence to engage with stakeholders and contribute in team settings.
