Head of Development, Japan

Phillip Riley has partnered with a leading international renewable energy investor and developer to appoint a Head of Development for Japan. This is a newly created and high-impact leadership role, combining regional leadership and hands-on project responsibilities.

With Japan positioned as a priority market for growth, our client is seeking a senior renewable energy professional with a demonstrable track record of development project delivery in the Japanese market, strong skills in M&A and transactions, a sharp commercial mindset, and deep experience in utility-scale battery energy storage projects.

As Head of Development, you will be responsible for:
  • Leading a diverse team and driving the development and delivery of renewable energy projects in Japan, from early-stage development through to financial close, construction, and into operations;
  • Taking primary responsibility for progressing BESS projects locally, with a strong emphasis on commercially viable and deliverable opportunities;
  • Navigating project approvals, grid connections, and regulatory processes with confidence and credibility;
  • Working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure projects are de-risked, well-structured, and bankable;
  • Representing the company in Japan, building and leveraging a strong network across regulators, grid operators, and industry stakeholders;
  • Contributing to the growth of the platform and helping shape long-term strategic direction in Japan;
  • Coordinating other project functions.

Our ideal candidate will bring:
  • Proficiency in both Japanese and English (required);
  • Proven experience developing renewable energy projects in Japan, with a focus on BESS technology (solar or wind would also be highly regarded);
  • Strong commercial acumen with an understanding of what makes a project financeable and buildable;
  • Deep understanding of the Japanese energy market, including experience engaging with relevant regulatory bodies and grid operators, and a developed industry network;
  • Hands-on and pragmatic approach to work, with the ability to lead a team whilst also driving project outcomes;
  • Determined, passionate, and energised by the opportunity to shape the clean energy transition in Japan;
  • Able to work effectively and collaboratively with culturally diverse colleagues across geographies.

This is an exceptional opportunity to take a foundational leadership role in a high-growth, well-capitalised platform with the mandate to shape the Japanese market entry strategy from the ground up.
