Phillip Riley is pleased to partner with TWS Controls in conducting a search for a Technical Engineer for the Christchurch HQ.

TWS Energy Controls is a Christchurch-based manufacturer of instrument transformers used in metering, protection and electrical infrastructure across New Zealand and Australia.

As demand for reliable and compliant electrical equipment grows, we are expanding our engineering team to support product design, testing and technical development.

The Role
This is a hands-on engineering role working across the design, development and testing of instrument transformer products.

Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will be involved across the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through to testing, validation and production support. You will also work closely with the IANZ-accredited test laboratory, supporting compliance and certification activities in line with industry standards.

This role sits across engineering, production and testing, so it will suit someone who enjoys practical problem solving rather than purely desk-based design work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design and development of instrument transformers
  • Produce CAD models, drawings and supporting documentation
  • Assist with product validation, including type and high voltage testing
  • Contribute to compliance and certification activities (AS/IEC 61869 and related standards)
  • Troubleshoot design and production issues
  • Support failure investigations and product improvements
  • Maintain structured engineering documentation aligned with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025
  • Provide technical support across engineering, production and sales teams
You will also have some involvement in mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continuous improvement across engineering and manufacturing processes.

What We’re Looking For
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Around 5+ years’ experience in an electrical engineering role
  • Experience in product design, manufacturing, or testing environments
  • Strong CAD capability (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
  • Understanding of electrical standards and compliance frameworks
  • Practical, hands-on approach to engineering and problem solving
  • Ability to work across teams and communicate clearly
Experience with instrument transformers or accredited test laboratories is beneficial, but not essential.

Growth and Development
TWS Energy Controls is a growing ANZ business with operations in New Zealand and Australia with plans to expand further over the next 1–2 years.
As a smaller, specialist manufacturer, the structure is relatively flat. This means:
  • Engineers are closer to decision making
  • There is exposure across multiple parts of the business
  • Opportunities to take on responsibility earlier than in larger organisations
For someone who is motivated by being involved in a growing business and contributing beyond a narrow job scope, this role offers a different type of career development in a large corporate environment.

About the Role
This role will suit someone who:
  • enjoys working across both design and testing
  • is comfortable working in a manufacturing environment
  • prefers practical problem solving over purely theoretical work
Why Join
  • Established ANZ manufacturer with a niche product offering
  • Exposure to both product design and high voltage testing
  • Collaborative environment across engineering and production
  • Christchurch-based role with a stable and growing workload
